Oahu Beach Cleanups for Earth Day 2024

While Oahu is known for its pristine beaches and beautiful ocean, it’s not immune to human impact and pollution. A number of beaches around the island unfortunately often see plastics and discarded fishing nets washed up on shore.

Plant a Tree

Holding baby tree. Where to plant trees in Oahu

It’s a classic Earth Day activity for a reason – every tree planted makes a difference!

And in Oahu, there are a couple of different options for an easy way to plant a tree even if you are visiting.

Gunstock Ranch Legacy Forest Planter’s Experience
Tours Daily at 9:30 AM & 3:30 PM
Gunstock Ranch

If you have transportation and are willing to invest in the experience, Gunstock Ranch on the north shore offers an amazing experience for those looking to plant a tree in Oahu. The purchase of a trackable $120 native Hawaiian tree directly supports the non-profit Hawaiian Legacy Reforestation Initiative. And during the tour, guides share information about Hawaii’s unique ecosystem and how your tree will contribute to it. You can even remotely track your tree’s growing progress afterward!

Plant Kalo with Papahana Kualoa
Every third and fourth Saturday of the month from 9:00am-12:00pm
46-403 Haʻikū Road

Volunteers learn about taking care of the land that in turn nurtures the whole area. Volunteer in the loi kalo (taro patch) planting or harvesting kalo on Community Workdays the third and fourth Saturdays of the month. All volunteers must RSVP to participate. Email logan@papahanakuaola.org

Aloha Tree Alliance Community Work Day
Saturday, April 18th 2026
Kuli’ou’ou Ridge Trail

Looking for a free way to plant a tree? Consider volunteering with Aloha Tree Alliance. During this community tree planting volunteer event, volunteers remove invasive species, prepare the earth, and plant native trees on one of the most beautiful hiking trails in east Oahu, the Kuli’ou’ou Ridge Trail.

Tree plantings remain a simple but powerful way to fight pollution and create a legacy that will give back to the earth and the community for decades to come.

Shop at a Zero Waste Store

If you’re considering shopping on Earth Day, we’d encourage you to reduce your environmental footprint by shopping at zero waste stores like Keep it Simple Honolulu Zero Waste and Protea Zero Waste.

These stores offer more sustainable alternatives to products that often contain single-use plastics. They also offer fantastic gift options and souvenirs that promote a more conscious way of living.

Get Out in Nature

Take advantage of Oahu’s breathtaking landscapes by going on a nature walk or a boat ride. There’s no better way to remind yourself of the beauty that the Earth provides than walking in the island’s forests, mountains and pristine coastline.

Consider booking a boat ride with Aloha Ocean, where you can experience the wonders of the ocean and encounter marine life in their natural habitat rather than captivity. During the tour, your guide will share valuable information about Oahu’s fragile marine ecosystem and protected wildlife.

This Earth Day, let’s come together to appreciate and protect the beauty of Oahu and its precious natural resources. Whether you’re shopping sustainably, volunteering, cleaning up the beach or simply enjoying the great outdoors, every action counts towards building a more sustainable and resilient future for our planet.
